Impella Heart Pump Device FDA Warning
The FDA issued a recall of instructions used for the device due to concerns that the pump catheter may puncture the wall of the left ventricle in the heart. The FDA classified the alert as the most severe action possible for a product capable of causing death or serious injury, excluding removal from the market. Despite this classification, the alert allows for the device’s ongoing usage, provided that an update regarding the associated risks is included in the 243-page instruction manual accompanying the pump.
The alert is the latest among concerns raised in recent years about the deadly side effects of cardiac devices, particularly those designed to take over the heart’s role in circulating blood.
Several studies indicated that Impella heart devices increase the risk of death in patients with unstable medical conditions.
